Women who access Avenues for support have written poems about their experiences and what Avenues means to them. Here is a selection of poetry written by the women:

THE BEST IS NEVER OVER

The best is never over,

The best has never gone,

There's always something lovely

To keep you struggling on;

There's always compendation,

For every cross you bear,

A secret consolation,

Hidden well somewhere.

Ends are new beginnings,

As one day you will see;

The best is never over,

The best is yet to be!

BALL AND CHAIN

I'm not looking for anyone
To take control of my life
I don't want to be a housekeeper
I don't want to be a wife

I just want to be the way I am
Sometimes you may not agree
But if you take the time now
Then maybe you will see

I have a lot to offer
Without the ball and chain
Work with me not against me
And together we can gain

Surely it is worth more to us
To share some happy rhymes
No need to live in pockets
Watching clocks and talking times

Lay back let the good feelings
Take control of you
Togetherness is what it takes
Controlling makes me blue

  My Life

A battered woman that's what I am,
Battered body, battered mind,
Mind screwed up can't sleep,
Mind screwed up can't eat,
Being hit from top to toe,
Trying not to let it show,
Walking slow in agony clutching
At straws to keep your sanity,
Taking deep breathes to ease the pain,
The pain that shows upon your face,
But you're trying not to feel disgraced,
People looking, people who know,
That in your mind you're about to blow,
Your mind can't take any more,
You know you've got to get up and go,
Go where?
Does anyone care?
